Street Fighting Technique of the Month – Long Range Thumb Gouge to Eye by Christopher “Bob” Roberts
1 CommentThis is an example of a street fighting eye gouge from boxing range.
Merely poking at the eye with an extended thumb or finger is impractical because the target is too small and, should you not hit it perfectly, your attack will have no effect and you may even hurt your own finger.
By preparing your attack by making contact with with the flat surface of your hand, finding the eye with the thumb and then launching a second attack, you can consistently hit the eye even under combat stress and low-light situations.

Ok, there seems to have been a little confusion about the slap before the eye gouge. Some people thought that the slap was an integral part of the technique and should be a forceful strike. That is not the case. The slap is just a means of targeting the eye by placing the flat of the hand on the side of the aggressor’s head and the fingertips on his ear.
I teach an exercise where you close your eyes and, immediately upon making contact with your training partner, feel along his body until you find his face, ear and, eventually, his eye to prepare to use this technique to escape from clinches and grappling holds. That is also a situation where you don’t need to, nor should you first strike your attacker with a slap.
Remember, that is only a one-minute long clip of an entire video about eye manipulation and, without having seen the rest, can lead to confusion.
