by admin on Jun.24, 2009, under Improvised Weapons

Here I demonstrate for you how to use house or car keys for self defense

I heard or read once that the simplest truths are often the greatest. No less the case is what I will reveal to you in this article. I will show you how to take your everyday car key or house key and turn it into a quick and expedient weapon.

The key to using the house key for weapons’ self defense is in knowing how to hold it and where to strike with it when using it as an instrument of self protection. When I say house key, I say this generically for it can be also a car key or a garage key, as long as it is made of metal and as long as it is pointy.

Let me go into detail now of the how-to’s of using house keys as weapons.

How NOT To Hold Keys For Self Defense

  • There is an erroneous idea when the suggestion of using and striking with keys in a self protection situation that you should grab hold of the key between your fingers and make a fist, that is, the key juts out between your index and middle fingers as though you were simulating an old-fashioned pair of brass knuckles. This is definitely NOT the way to hold the key to strike.
  • Should you try to strike while making a fist, you stand to seriously injure you hand because once you strike your target, especially if you strike any of the bony areas of your attacker, there is a great chance that you will push the butt of the key back into the fleshy part of your hand, thus making it very easy for your attacker to finish you off because now you are trying to defend yourself with only one hand.

How To CORRECTLY Hold Keys For Self Defense

  • There is only one safe way to hold a key for use in self protection and that is to hold it the same way that you hold the key when you to open a door, that is, hold it between your index finger and your thumb.

How To Choose The Correct Targets To Hit With Keys For Self Defense

  • True reality-based self defense is more about selecting the correct target rather than picking the fanciest technique. Aim always for the soft and easy-to-damage parts of the body such as the eyes or the throat of the attacker.

When To Ready And Take Out Your Keys

  • When you get off your car on a strange street
  • When you hear footsteps behind you
  • When approaching suspicious looking characters ahead of you and you can’t turn back around

Practice Drawing And Stabbing With Your Key

  • Get into the habit of practicing periodically throughout the day how you would take out your keys and how you would make the quick jabbing and stabbing movement in the event of a street attack on you. Better yet – develop the habit of having your keys out in and your hands as you walk – especially in suspicious and unfamiliar areas.

Be aware. Be safe. And be ready.
