Every fight has its own identity, its own life cycle like any living, breathing entity.
One of the reasons why pre-choreographed moves and katas give one a false feeling of readiness is that no fight pattern is predictable. And no fight pattern could ever follow a system of steps such as those found in a form or a kata.
Even when you learn how to dance with steps: 1, 2, 3 and 1,2, 3, when it’s time to “get down”on the dance floor, something else must come into to play, something that cannot be “taught” in the traditional sense. We are talking now about being “in the zone” or a state know in psychological circles as “flow”.
Your fight training practice must be done in an environment of spontaneity, surprise, non-compliant partners and an ever-ready state to adjust to whatever is thrown at you. This encourages and enhances your ability to quickly and more easily get in touch with that ineffable state we call “flow”.
Charles Prosper (aka “The Street Fighting Sifu”)
What is your take on “fighting in the zone” or as we like to call it, “flow”. Leave me your comments below. Thanks.

Norm Bettencourt, master trainer and reality-based fighter demonstrates the use of a chair as a shield against a knife attack
Here is a classic interview with master Bettencourt.
4 Tips How To Defend Yourself Against A Knife Attack
Charles Prosper: How are you doing, Norm? We’re glad to have you here with us today. Can you tell us what is your background in fighting and martial art?
Norm Bettencourt: Well, I hold a black belt in karate, and my experience in security is that I have worked in the security field for 15 years, everything from bouncing to body-guarding to doing regular security work.
Charles Prosper: Wow! So you’ve had a pretty extensive, real-life background, I take.
Norm Bettencourt: Definitely. Definitely. Now, I teach full time.
Charles Prosper: Wonderful. Wonderful. Now, our subject here today is going to be how to defend yourself against a knife attack. And this is an important and very serious subject. Do you have 4 key steps or secrets or tips that can really help a person to defend themselves against a knife attack?
Norm Bettencourt: For sure.
• The First One would be Be Offensive.
Don’t go in defensive mode or else you’re going to get cut much more often.
• The Second One is when you are getting slashed or getting cut, realize that that is the reality of a knife fight, so you want to Protect Your Vitals.
So, use your forearms to block any slashes that are coming your way. As well you want to use your environment to try to disarm your attacker.
Charles Prosper: Would this be number 3?
Norm Bettencourt: Yes, it would be. So,
• Number Three would be Use Your Environment To Disarm Your Attacker.
Basically, pick up a chair. Use it as a shield between you and that knife, and beat your attacker with it or hit his hand that is holding the knife to disarm him. Next is
Once You Gain Control Of That Hand Holding The Knife, Never Let Go Until That Knife Has Been Taken Out Of His Hand.
Do whatever you got to do. Bite or whatever. Bite that hand to release that knife.
Charles Prosper: So, that would be the Fourth Tip?
Norm Bettencourt: Yes.
Charles Prosper: Wow! So then with this, this would be a realistic approach for someone to defend themselves against a knife assault?
Norm Bettencourt: Yes.
Charles Prosper: Very good, Norm. We thank you again for some real world advice that could possibly save someone’s life.
Norm Bettencourt: Thank you.

How can a small, frail young girl, knock out cold, a much larger, more muscular, more powerful and “experienced” professional bouncer? I’ll tell you how – the head butt!
Watch this incredible clip of one of the most effective head butts ever caught on tape. With the head-butt, it doesn’t matter how young or how old you think you are. If you can head butt, you can destroy any aggressor!
The clip is a real surveillance video and is therefore a little grainy, but notice the white arrow of the thumbnail photo which points to the foot of the head butting girl.
An Interview with Christopher “Bob” Roberts on The Head Butt!
Charles Prosper - In this article, Christopher “Bob” Roberts, expert reality-based combat instructor, ex-soldier, bouncer, body guard and police trainer is going to give us insights on one of his favorite techniques that he has used in real street fighting combat – the head butt. So, Bob, help us out. Give us 3 reasons why the head butt is so effective in a real street fight.
Christopher “Bob” Roberts - Alright, well -
The 1st Reason Why The Head Butt Is So Effective Is Because The Hardness and The Weight of The Human Head Is Basically Similar To A Bowling Ball - If want to have an idea how effective a good head butt is, go home tonight, lay in your bed, and have your wife drop your bowling ball on your face.
Charles Prosper – (Laughter.)
Christopher “Bob” Roberts – And that is basically what it feels to be hit by a head butt.
Charles Prosper – Wow!
Christopher “Bob” Roberts – Okay, now -
The 2nd Thing Is Kind of Interesting in That You Don’t Need To Use Your Hands or Your Feet To Head Butt Somebody - That basically means that if we’re in a situation where you’re grabbing both my of my arms, when somebody is grabbing my arms, I can still effectively head butt.
If we’re in a situation where we’re grappling up against the wall or on the ground, I can still even though my hands are being used to hold you down or to push you away, I can still head butt you because I don’t need my arms or my legs. It’s all head.
I know a lot of people not used to the head butt will only look for the arms or the legs.
The 3rd Thing Is If You Do It Properly, You Can Launch It Without Any Preparation Whatsoever - This basically means, people will talk about preemptive strikes, you do not have to prepare yourself; you do not have to wind up.
You basically go from talking to a person – and then immediately launch into a head butt that he will not see coming because you didn’t prepare for it. You didn’t wind up. You didn’t get ready. And -
Charles Prosper – Now, Bob, I have one quick question before we wrap up because this is a confusion with a lot of people. Where is the spot on your head that you strike with? Is it the forehead, or is it the top of the head, where the forehead meets the hairline is?
Christopher “Bob” Roberts – It is right around where the hairline would be. And if you’re basically going to come too high or too low, make sure you come too high.
It’s not anywhere near the eyebrows. And it is not in the middle of your forehead. It’s basically around where the hairline is, or about a half of an inch lower than the hairline. Because other than that, if you go any lower than that, you risk the chance of cutting your own forehead, your own eyebrows and bleeding a lot into your eyes.
Charles Prosper – Okay, that is a very important bit of information, and with that we’re wrapping it up. And again, thank you so much, Bob for these insights.
Bob – Alright, thanks a lot, Charles.
What is your experience or your take on the head butt? Leave A Reply and Comment below. Thanks.
Respectively,
Charles Prosper

Done wrong, the thumb gouge to the eye is almost useless . . . but done right, it is one of the most dangerous and effective self defense techniques that street fighting or WWII combative training has to offer. Read on, to learn the five simple guidelines to the effective use of thumb gouges to the eyes:
1. Don’t “poke” the eyes, gouge past them–Regardless of whether you are trying to control someone through the use of pressure against his eyes or are actually trying to destroy the eyeball, don’t ever just poke at the eye itself like a little kid. Rather you should try to force your thumb between the eye socket and the eyeball into the skull.
This will cause more pain, more fear and continued, increasing pressure will either destroy the eyeball or pop it out of the skull.
2. Thumb the eyes from the inside–If you were to place your thumb between the eyeball and eye socket on the outside of his eye, near his temple and he were to push your hand away, that would be the end of your thumb gouge.
If you had chosen to gouge the eye between the eye and the nose, on the inside of his face and he were to force your hand to the side, he would have to rake your thumb across the entire surface of his own eyeball, causing pain and damage to himself.
3. Don’t gouge with one hand, keylock around his head or neck–I hate it when I see pictures of inexperienced trainers just grabbing a person’s head and forcing their thumbs into his eyes. If you were to do that, he could easily just push or pull your hands away.
Now imagine holding his head in a sort of headlock, keylocking your arms (a keylock is a way to cross both forearms to control a part of an opponent’s body and simultaneously combine the strength of both arms on a hold) and then thumb gouging his eye. Its hard to explain a keylock in words, but, if an aggressor were to try to push you away from him, a keylock will automatically force your thumb even more forcefully into his eye.
4. Aim your thumb gouges with your palms and fingertips–If you were to try to shoot your thumb directly out into an aggressor’s eye, you would miss much more often than not. Instead, first make contact somewhere on your attacker’s body with the palm of your hand.
As soon as you have made contact with your palm, you should be able to run you hand along his body and find his head, even with your eyes close or in the dark. When your palm is on the side of his head, find his ears with the tips of your fingers, which will bring your thumbs automatically into position to gouge the eyes.
Try it on yourself right now:
- Put the palm of your right hand on the right side of your face and touch your right ear with your fingertips.
- Now circle your thumb around and it will automatically go between your nose and eyeball, as when using a thumb gouge to get out of a choke from behind.
- Put your right palm on the left side of your face, fingertips on your left ear and your thumb automatically goes into position to gouge the eye, like a thumb gouge to someone standing in front of you.
5. Make hooks with your thumbs–As you can imagine, the optimal body weapon for causing pain to and / or damaging the eyes is a small or pointy one. Therefore, you need to be sure that you are always using the tip of your thumb and not the wide and soft pad to apply pressure.
A very simple way to make sure that you do this is to make a hook with your thumb. In other words, curl your thumb in so that contact with your opponents head is only made with your palms and the tip, not the flat pad of your finger. This holds true regardless of whether you are attacking with your thumb or the other fingers.

Combat Reality-Based Instructor Christopher “Bob” RobertsGuys, I just wanted to ask what your opinions of throwing in self defense are. By this I don’t mean just what you teach or are taught, rather what your street fighting experience with throws is.
Okay, I’ll start:
The last time that I “threw” someone in a street fight was when I was working as a bouncer in a strip club. The only way that I saw to prevent a fight was to remove the more aggressive guest from the club. I went in from behind (he was a lot stronger than me) gained control of both of his arms and tried to drag him away, then I realized that that wasn’t going to work and I ended up “throwing him to the ground.”
Basically, I just pulled him backwards and tried to turn him and trip him. We both bumped into the bar, tripped over several bar stools and fell to the ground. I made sure to land on top of him and was able to pin him to the ground with pressure against one of his eyes.
It certainly looked a lot less than impressive, but it worked, which was very impressive, considering his size, so I was happy with the result.
I guess what I’m basically trying to say is that I treat throwing and take-downs like ground fighting–if you stumble with a guy, try to land on top, but don’t go out of your way to “throw” someone.
What are your opinions and experiences?
Train smart and watch your back,
Christopher “Bob” Roberts

Neil Neazer demonstrates the close-range surprise first-strike front shin-kick to the groin.
A front kick involving the shin is an awesome closed quarters combat (strike) kick because it is non-telegraphic. It is easily throw forward by way of just raising the knee then extending the rest of the leg. The top part of the shin which is the hardest plays the impact part disabling the attacker. It is quick and easy to use, to surprise-kick and get out of there.

Have you ever used a closed-quarters shin kick such as this?

This has got to be one of the most amazing real street fighting footage ever captured – one amazing street fighter taking on and knocking out one-by-one about a crowd of a dozen men trying to attack him.
This TV news footage seems to have been filmed somewhere on the streets of Iran or Iraq. One guy is suddenly attacked by a crowd of at least 10 or twelve men. Oh, brother, but what a surprise he gives them.
Almost in single file, one-by-one, he gives them a royal ass-whipping. It appears that he is probably a boxer or a trained street fighter very adept at using hand strikes to the face. Every time he lands a blow, they go down!
He handles would-be kickers. He strikes, and throws them to the ground!
One thing that we notice is that he doesn’t allow himself to be surrounded, and as soon as anyone walks into his personal space – hit strikes – no warning necessary. And the amazing thing is that none of his strikes are wasted. They land and they fall.
At the end, some of the sorry-ass attackers are on the ground – unconscious.
Whatever the style or system he has mastered, you cannot do anything but admire his aggressive fighting spirit and give him a 3-minute standing ovation. This, ladies and gentleman, is what real street fighting and self protection is all about.

Why complicate things? The KISS Principle is Keep-It-Super-Simple. Master D’Antonio demonstrates here one of his signature 3-second “behind-the-head” gun disarm.
After watching a previous blog post here on this site, on the world’s worst gun disarm executed by a so-called, self-proclaimed ninjutsu expert, and analyzed by Master D’Antonio, I think that we deserve to see how it is supposed to be done. Without further ado, observe how a real gun disarm technique is executed.
Master D’Antonio is very fast. So, watch carefully. Don’t blink you eyes, or you’ll miss it.
We welcome you questions and comments. Thanks.

I have just witnessed here what has to be the absolute worst and most tactically flawed gun disarming method ever captured on video.
I need to make a serious point, being a ninjutsu practitioner of 31 years, what this person is so poorly attempting to do is on no way reflective of anything remotely connected to ninjutsu of the ninja in any way shape or form.
Please make note that these techniques will get anyone killed should you attempt this nonsense!
The Life Endangering Errors found in this “Gun Disarm”:
Error #1: Spinning In Towards The Attacker
This places you within the grab zone of the attacker. The assailant has the options of grabbing you or punching you as you spin in towards him. Notice the UNREALISTIC attack. The assailant just has his other arm dangling loosely and makes no attempt to use his free arm when nin-joke begins to spin in.
Error #2: Catching The Weapon Under His Arm
You have got to be kidding me! Where is the control of the weapon? Nothing is preventing the attacker from pulling hard to free his weapon from under the nin-jokes arm.
Error #3: An Over The Shoulder Throw
First this is an arm drag throw. He makes no attempt to break the elbow in the throw, and he bends at the back so much that his assailant can easily pull him down to the ground upon impact.
Also note that the attacker is STILL HOLDING THE WEAPON! Nin-joke makes zero effort at a disarm or to control the weapon. The disarm must happen immediately. Nin-joke has already completed two techniques and has yet to relieve the man of the weapon!
The arm of the attacker is still dangling loosely, and he makes no attempt to grab the nin-joke as it would happen in a realistic scenario.
Error #4: The Man Being Thrown Hits The Ground, And Still Is Yet To Be Relieved Of His Weapon
Not that upon completion of the throw nin-joke goes to one knee, limiting his mobility, but not only that, HE BRINGS THE WEAPON ACROSS HIS OWN STOMACH! Then reaches across his body finally relieving the attacker his weapon.
Error #5: After Relieving The Attacker Of The Weapon, He Makes No Attempt To Gain Solid Control Of The Pistol
Instead the nin-joke waves the weapon about, several times allowing the barrel (you know, that nice area where the “friendly” little bullet likes to travel out of) straight across his own body while slamming the hammer end into his opponent as an IMPACT WEAPON.
Yes the same impact that could possibly cause the weapon to fire accidentally if the happens to be a round chambered. Maybe he has never heard of accidental or inertia fire.
When dealing with weapons disarms you need to follow a strict set of principals that are designed to keep your ass alive! Check out some of my videos and my interviews here with Charles Prosper to fully understand the safe way to relieve someone of their weapon!!!
As always Be Safe and Keep It Real!
