A Street Fighter’s Recogition of Master Michael Warren by David D’Antonio
by admin on Sep.28, 2009, under Street Fighting Instructors - Michael Warren

Mr Warren:
I must state that I’m not one to be easily swayed nor impressed, however your email is demonstrative of a true gentleman and professional. I fully agree with you and was highly impress when you stated:
” I find even my most harsh of my critics a shining light in pointing out different points of view and experiences. In analyzing them I am often further resolved in my original assessment but, I do, on occasion, find a kernel of truth and thus a way to improve my system of instruction and methods ….”
Words like that can only be spoken by a man whom is devoid of ego and a true master of his craft. What truly stunned me by those words is that I was speaking with Charles last night on the phone and was telling him almost word for word the exact same thing.
A master is born by understanding that his may not be the only or best way, and being able to take criticism, and apply newer and or better knowledge is key for growth.
I admired you before this, as your system is amazing, I RESPECT the hell out of you now because you have shown what so many few have been able to show in this business, that being respect, professionalism and humility.
Mr.Warren, I thank you for clearing this up and for what its worth, you have a friend and ally in me and my entire organization.
Respectfully
David D’Antonio

Street Fighters Best – A Message from Michael Warren of URBAN Combatives
by admin on Sep.28, 2009, under Street Fighting Instructors - Michael Warren
It seems lately that some of our fellows have gotten the attention of those who would speak with threats more than a candid discussion of methods of training and techniques or strategies to save lives. Recently, one such individual has even mentioned my name without my being made aware and certainly without my permission. J.Salva.
I would like to take the moment to respond and clarify that he does not speak for myself, my company, or my URBAN Military Combatives System. His insults are not spoken on my behalf.
Regardless, I do apologize for his statements. I also would like to clarify that this forum is a free forum where professionals are encouraged to keep each other honest with frank and candid discussions on the field of Street Fighting.
As such an outlet, I find even my most harsh of my critics a shining light in pointing out different points of view and experiences. In analyzing them I am often further resolved in my original assessment but, I do, on occasion, find a kernel of truth and thus a way to improve my system of instruction and methods resulting in more saved lives on the battlefields of the world.
In doing so, I try to ensure that all of the discussion are respectful and polite as possible which I believe lends myself to showing an intellectual approach to the science of conflict resolution.
Speaking from friendship is always the fastest way to learn from another human. I would like to encourage my fellows to also share their thoughts on verbal conflict mediation. I find that often the most effective tool in conflict resolution is first in talking.
Very Respectfully,
Michael Warren

Street Fighting Help – Live – Emergency Call Recorded of a Lady Being Attacked
by admin on Sep.28, 2009, under women self defense
I just got an urgent chat request from one of my Facebook friends. It doesn’t get any better than this. A live on-call help of a lady in distress. A lady whom we will call Nadine. (Her real name is withheld for respect to her privacy.) But the chat that you read below is unedited and just happened only minutes ago.
When she contacted me, in that very instant, was a crazed neighbor trying to break into her home, and cause her harm. I immediately got on the phone with Master David D’Antonio, and began to give him the play-by-play of what was happening.
She would tell me something. I would relay it to David. David would give me the self-protection advice. I would then relay it back to her. Following is the exact transcript of the call:
Nadine

Capoeira for Street Fighting – An Analysis by Master David D’Antonio
by admin on Sep.27, 2009, under ineffective street fighting systems
Charles, let me get your back on this before the frenzy of break dancers start piling in on you!
Now while the clip that you show in the previous post http://tinyurl.com/ybc6rep on Capoeira versus a boxer is from a movie, it is highly demonstrative of Capoeria in application.
Actually this guy moves better than most Capoeira practitioners…..but in a real fight I believe the results would be similar.
What everyone fails to realize, and you and I have spoken at length about this, is that these kind of guys think that flack wins a fight. What they don’t remember is while they are doing their little dance, the guy they are about to engage may have already produced a weapon and all the fancy moves can’t stop a bullet.
Now with that said, is is not a fatal flaw to showboat in a street fight, but get in there and immediately engage and neutralize the threat …that is how a street altercation is won.
Like I stated to you, I don’t teach my students how to fight, I train them to SURVIVE.
These fancy ass martial artists think they can dance about and go into their best hiii yaaaa pose and win a fight. That will get you shot.
You need realistic, non fancy, to the point take-em out techniques.
Great post Charles. Capoeria is great EXERCISE, might be very fun to do…but it is NOT fighting.
Anyone have an issue with me saying that can comment to me and Ill be happy to prove them waaaay wrong.
“Keep it real.”

Street Fighting Moves – Capoeira – Why This Is One of The Most Ineffective Systems for Reality-Based Street Fighting
by admin on Sep.27, 2009, under ineffective street fighting systems
Watch the long-haired Capoeira guy doing the fancy flips and how the boxer responds.
There is one fighting style that I feel is all but useless in a real life or death struggle for your life. This fighting system is:
- Capoeira
Wait! Wait! Wait! Don’t start buying your tickets yet to look me up in Los Angeles to give me a piece of your mind and/or foot. Just hear me out, and then let common sense be your guide.
Why Capoeira Is Ineffective As A Reality-Based Fighting Style:
Capoeira is a fighting system which originated from Africa and was later migrated to Brazil. This is a so-called fighting system based on dance, grace, acrobatic coordinated moves such as one handed stands while your head is upside down and your feet flip into the air before it twirls to the ground. These acrobatic premises in themselves are counter to grounded street defense common sense.
Capoeira causes immediate doubt and misgivings for me in that it is usually accompanied by rhythmic music. Real street fighting is very chaotic, and it would be very hard to write a musical score to the explosive, violent and unpredictable nature of its movements.
Whenever you have an audience who is doing so much applauding as they watch staged demonstrations of martial arts accompanied by music is cause to give me doubt. Why am I obligated to call entertainment “martial art”?
Yours truly,
Charles Prosper

Self Defense Street Fighting – Why Bouncers Make the Best Self Defense Teachers
by admin on Sep.25, 2009, under Christopher "Bob" Roberts (Articles)
Go into a martial arts school and you will see pictures of the master meditating, stretching, doing forms and winning medals. However, should you one day leave the school and be attacked, the only thing in the world important to you will be your ability to fight like a street fighter. Being a good street fighter is what it takes to survive street attacks.
So, who is really qualified to teach you to fight like a street fighter? A martial artist who has never been in a fight in his life or someone who has gone out of his way to get a job that basically consists of him getting involved in fights that other people start?
I would say that the best instructors are either bouncers, some police or some military guys, but the most qualified to teach self defense to civilians are the bouncers. Here’s why:
1. Bouncers have the same (lack of) equipment as civilians–Attack a cop or soldier with a knife or gun and he will do his best to shoot you. Attack a bouncer with a weapon and he will be in exactly the same situation you would be in on the street. Some bouncers carry lead gloves, retractable batons or pepper spray, but most don’t and even those weapons are things that any civilian could obtain and carry. What a bouncer does when faced with armed and / or multiple attackers will also work for you because the circumstances are the same.
2. Bouncers are constantly fighting–Street fights and attacks are over so fast that, if someone is attacked and another person calls the police immediately, they can’t possibly arrive before the fight is over. Bouncers are there from beginning to end. True, some bouncers work for years in a high-class disco and never have to do anything to get their hands dirty. A good trainer would have experience in a place like I work in. Last week I was in three serious fights in one night. Ask your strip-mall karate master if he was in three fights in his entire life.
3. Bouncers have to rely on themselves–There are no SWAT teams or quick reaction forces for bouncers to call when they are outnumbered or in trouble. A bouncer can never back down from a fight. If he gets hurt, he has to ignore the pain and do the best he can. There is no referee to stop the match if he cannot defend himself. Exactly the same situation as you will be in if someone would try to mug or rape you in the real world.
4. Bouncers haven’t been there and seen that, they’ve been everywhere and seen everything–Most bouncers have martial arts or sport fighting training. Most bouncers don’t train in sports or arts anymore. The best ones have taken what they have learned in the gym, tested it on the street and combined it with the rough and tumble street fighting techniques that they have seen work, time and time again. This is the proving ground that has produced my concepts of street fighting based self defense.
5. Bouncers are masters of the mental aspects of self defense–Situational awareness, fear management, killer instinct, pain tolerance. The mental aspects of self defense are the most important by far and exactly these aspects are missing from the repertoire of 99.9 % of the strip mall martial arts masters or self-proclaimed self defense instructors out there, whereas 99.9 % of the real bouncers out there have mastered all of these areas. Some bouncers are fat, others skinny, many smoke, but they are still capable of constantly surviving every violent encounter they might face. How can that be? Well, without the mental edge, a bouncer has a very short career.

Street Fighting Principle – Do You Know the 4 Reasons Why a “Fair” Fight is a Fool’s Fight?
by admin on Aug.28, 2009, under street fighting principle
Do you believe in a “fair” fight? Well, if you do, I would like to invite you over to my house to meet the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. In this post, I will give you the 4 reasons why a “fair” fight is a fool’s fight.
How Do You – How Can You Define A “Fair” Fight?
Well, let’s see. We could start by saying a “fair” fight is one of honor, chivalry and gentlemanly conduct. What the… ! What the hell are we talking about here? Is this the 19th Victorian era where you slap the dude in the face with a pair of white-laced gloves and challenge him to a duel in the garden courtyard? Man! If somebody slaps me in the face with gloves – or anything else – there’s going to be some pretty serious derriere damage happening – right then and there!
Let us examine in even greater detail this absurd idea of fairness in a street fight. (We are not talking sports fighting here. We are talking street fighting!) What else does “fighting fair” mean?
#1 – A Fair Fight Means That You Will Strike Your Aggressor Once, Maybe Hurt Him, And Then Stop Striking – This is an extreme tactical error, for you are allowing an assailant who is out to harm you to recover and come back at you with even more force and angry aggression.
#2 – A Fair Fight Means That If He Asks For Mercy You Will Give It To Him – God is the forgiver of souls. You are the kicker of asses. You do not stop your attack until the threat against you has been neutralized. Street-savvy fighters will feign being hurt just for you to let up so that they can then attack you more viciously.
#3 – A Fair Fight Means You Will Have a Reticence or Fear of Hurting Your Assailant – Your fear of hurting the other person is practically a “suicidal mindset”. If you fear hurting the other person, you will not use your most damaging and effective blows. You will “play fight” with him until he sees the chance and the opening to seriously hurt you. You have the right to hurt someone in a real fight. That’s what’s fighting is all about.
#4 – A Fair Fight Means You Will Wait Until He Is Ready To Fight You – If he takes off his jacket – you will wait ’til he takes off his jacket. If he says, let’s step outside and fight – you will politely follow him outside. What the hell is that about! While he is taking off his jacket, “clock” him on the jaw while his arms are still caught up in his coat sleeves! While he is walking ahead of you to go outside to fight, hammer-fist him from behind on the nape of the neck!
As my teacher, Norm Bettencourt would say, “There is no such thing as a dirty fighter – only an educated one.”
I welcome you comments.
Respectfully,
Charles Prosper

Do You Know Why Insults are Actually the Greatest Form of Flattery? You Will After You Hear What This Great Ninja Has To Say!
by admin on Aug.19, 2009, under David D'Antonio (Interviews)
I have been doing a lot of thinking lately and have come to a mind blowing realization. That realization is that I must be doing something right. Here is why I have come to this conclusion:
I am 36 years old and have been actively involved in the martial arts since I was 5 years old, 31 years for those of you with no calculator handy! HAHA!
I have been teaching for quite some number of years now, and about ten years ago, a few people decided to go on a internet rant about how I was too young to teach, a fraud, no good at all and any other such nonsense they could come up with. I say nonsense because the majority of them had never once stepped into my dojo. This made me wonder how they could form such harsh opinions of someone they had never met.
This went on for a few years and at the time it really bothered me that people were saying all of these horrible things about me. I never showed them that it bothered me, but nonetheless it really did. It went from these people attacking my martial arts ability and credibility to making personal attacks against my physical appearance, marital status (being a single dad) and even a few death threats. Then after awhile it pretty much died down, other martial artists becoming the targets of these attacks.
With my popularity on the rise again, this time with much more zest than before, I have received a few negative comments. But funny thing, this time I actually loved the negative attention. It was then that it hit me like a ton of bricks….
The reason for this is because I have seen over the past ten years that almost every MAJOR martial arts master in the spotlight has undergone the same sort of negative attacks from the same types of people. Those being JEALOUS individuals who can not stand to see anyone succeed. I had been included in the same group as the famous and prominately spotlighted masters. I am a success!
Now there is a serious difference between looking at someones technique and making a comment as to its effectiveness or tactical fortitude and outright attacking their character and ability. I will often give constructive criticism of a technique in hopes to open the eyes of the person doing it, should I see tactical errors that could get them killed in a confrontation should the same error be made. And yes at times I can be blunt to get my point across.
If a master chooses to contact me and has feedback or critique on my technique I listen because this is how we grow and learn. Any true martial artist should be open-minded and devoid of ego enough to not only accept but crave critique from other masters. However it is another story altogether to go on a slandering and insulting campaign against another martial artist. If you don’t like what they do that is your choice, but don’t attack them. Again there is a fine, yet quite defined line between constructive criticism and just being an asshole.
So with that said, I must take it as though I have finally made it. Seeing as all of the great names in the martial arts that have been the subject of critique and criticism and downright slander to all out threats, I am among a sacred fraternity of those whom others are jelous of and could only hope to be. This must surely be why so many criticize us so frequently.
Or we all must be just that damn good that we are constantly at the front of your mind occupying your thoughts and taking up your precious cyber-dojo time. Yes that must certainly be the case. Considering the fact that every successful and prominent master the world over has at one time or another gone under the gun of the critics, it must truly mean something amazing and special when I too have been included in the list of those criticized, it is like a hall of fame or a who’s who list.
So here is to the brotherhood of the best. It shows, you know you’re at the top when the others start to hate you. Thanks for the criticism, thanks for the death threats (as empty as they are), thanks for making fun at me…it is because of you folks that I know I have achieved success and that you envy me. It just goes to show that insults are the best form of flattery!
David D’Antonio
